The Dogon of Mali.
The Dogon of Mali in West Africa are a tribe of deep mystery, remarkable for their knowledge of astronomy and the unshakable belief that they were once visited by
intelligent beings from the star system Sirius. Many of these claims have been the focus of sharp disagreement, and of particular contention is the fact that the Dogon knew of a white dwarf, companion
star to Sirius, long before it's presence was detected by conventional astronomy. They also claim that beings from the star system Sirius paid regular visits to the tribe, imparting to them knowledge and
wisdom which has proved the backbone of their culture !
Thorough Investigation.
Critics say it is impossible to verify these claims and that any special knowledge the Dogon might possess could have been passed on to them from sources much closer to
home! The fact is however that the Dogon were subject to an intense investigation by a dedicated pair of French anthropologists Marcel Griaule and Germaine Dieterlen. In total this dedicated couple spent
a staggering twenty years with the Dogon, finally winning their confidence to the extent where they learnt many of the tribes inner most secrets. These findings were later published in a scholarly
article entitled: "A Sudanese Sirius".
Astronomical knowledge.
The findings of this erudite document left little doubt that the Dogon were privy to astronomical knowledge that was hard to explain. Not only did they know of the existence
of Sirius B, the faint companion star to Sirius, only visible to the most powerful telescopes, but were also aware of the basic mechanics of the solar system, including the respective orbits of the
planets.
In the magazine "The Unexplained" the writer Francis Hitching summarises the findings of another writer Robert Temple whose book "The Sirius Mystery", achieved critical acclaim.
"A careful reading of the source material ....convinced him that the Dogon were indeed the possessors of an ancient wisdom that concerned not just Sirius B but the
solar system in general. They said that the moon was 'dry and dead like dry dead blood'. Their drawing of the planet Saturn had a ring around it (two other exceptional cases of primitive tribes privy to
this information are known.) They knew that the planets revolved around the sun, and recorded the movements of Venus in their sacred architecture. They knew of the four major moons of Jupiter first seen
by Galileo. They knew correctly that the Earth spins on its axis. They believed there was an infinite number of stars and that there was a spiral force involved in the Milky Way to which the Earth was
connected ".
Extraterrestrial visitation.
Perhaps the most remarkable of the claims made by the Dogon is that they were once visited by intelligent beings from the star system Sirius. These meticulously recorded
encounters bear an astonishing similarity to the Mesopotamian accounts of Oannes. The beings which the Dogon called Nommos (interestingly the Greek word for law) are said to have descended from the sky
to a great rush of air that sent clouds of dust billowing skywards !
When these beings were seen to emerge, they were half fish and half man, with a missionary zeal to educate and civilise the people they came into contact with. In return for
this knowledge the Dogon bestowed on their celestial visitors the titles of: "Masters of the Water", "The Instructors", and "The Monitors"!
According to the Dogon these beings were the overseers of the universe, and worshipped them as guardians of spiritual principles. It is also a Dogon belief that one day the
Nommos will return and be resurrected as "Guardians of the Universe"!
