The stars - an historical document!

Since earliest times man has grouped together adjoining stars to form recognisable patterns called constellations. In many cases their shape was drawn up to resemble ancient heroes, mythological creatures, or other legendary figures of long ago. Now some occultists believe that locked into the shape of the constellations is a coded history of this planet, concerning times unimaginably distant.

Survival struggle.

The theory behind constellation outlines maintains that frequent world ages saw Mankind in a bitter fight for survival. Natural catastrophes, epidemics, global warfare, attacks from other planetary systems - these are all discernible from the mythology of these names. Moreover these disasters left few survivors.

According to the philosopher Plato, those who remained "were uneducated", hence a record of events that seems like a fable. Then perhaps an idea occurred. An idea to cement the history of the world in an imperishable form. In other words to preserve it in the outline of the stars. So long as the stars survive our history would survive. At least that's the theory, but how true is it?

Time cycles.

Most ancient societies believed time was cyclical. This in turn implied that events were also cyclical - that they could be predicted. In astrology this is done by the position of the planets. The ancients also knew of a much larger time cycle - the precessional wobble. Briefly this is described as a slight wobble of the Earth on its axis. It means that star positions relative to the Earth are changing in a cycle that takes around 26,000 years to complete. One effect of this is a series of changing pole stars. The current pole star is Polaris. When the pyramids were built it was Thuban in Draco. Twelve thousand years ago, at the time of Plato's estimate for the Atlantis disaster it was close to the bright star Vega. Remarkably in Arabic, this name is said to mean "fall", implying the fall of Mankind.

Epic Encounter.

What is apparent in the constellations is the cohesive theme of some epic encounter - events that may actually have happened.

In Greek legend Apollo routed the python at Delphi - a struggle reflected in the stars. For instance the very ancient constellation Ophiuchus - a forgotten member of the zodiac - represents a man fighting with a snake. Just beside them flies Aquila, the mythical bird that carried Jupiter's thunder-weapon. Just symbolism? Or do we have an account here of a celestial battle - of Good against Evil? Below them, for instance, is another war emblem - Sagittarius, the archer. To the ancient Sumerians this was Nergal, the god of war. In the northern hemisphere this is the lowest point of the suns orbit. Perhaps it also depicts Mankind's lowest state, when war ruled on Earth and in the skies.

Slaughter.

Unfortunately things get progressively worse. Now the "Earth is wet with slaughter" as Thomas Bulfinch describes in his book "Myth and legend". One by one the 'gods' desert it, until only Astraea remains. Eventually she too departs to the stars - her virtue immortalised by the constellation of Virgo, the Virgin. Hard on the heels of Astraea's departure comes justice. The Earth is weighted in the balance - represented by the constellation of Libra, the weighing scales. Jupiter then resolves to destroy the Earth with his thunder-weapon, but fearing a pan-galactic conflagration decides instead to punish it with a deluge. As a result Atlantis, and the whole world of that day are wiped out.

Ancient pre-history.

We see then that there is more than just a vague impression that the outline of the constellations were not randomly decided. Instead we find in them the hint of some incredible pre-historic struggle, involving not just our world but other celestial forces. As Moira Timms comments in her book The Six O'clock Bus: "The analogies are obvious, and quite impressive. This is one of the clearest examples of 'As above so below'!"
