Great Influence.
Since earliest times Mankind has always looked upon the skies as the abode of the gods. In fact it is true
to say we have a definite association with the sky that is underwritten by a vast amount of traditional literature. Indeed it would be no exaggeration to claim that this absorption with the sky has
influenced the entire fabric of the worlds laws and social conventions.
Enduring relationship.
To all intents and purposes the human race - whether we like it or not - are a people heavily moulded by an
enduring relationship with the celestial domain. The question is what lies behind this relationship? Is it just mere fantasy or does it represent something much more important? Something that expresses
the ultimate purpose behind this world and the universe that contains it?
Special creation.
To the ancients there was really no doubt. Space was the abode of the gods. But it went much further than
this. Because as our special feature on the Culture Bearers clearly illustrates, the ancients were convinced that sky people were directly responsible for setting us on
the road to cultural and spiritual maturity. Indeed they went one further, claiming that we ourselves were specially created by sky gods, set in a world that was idyllically furnished with every good
thing!
In the image of the gods.
In the words of many ancient writings, this world, or at least it’s biological diversity, was the garden
creation of the gods who seemed to look rather like ourselves. This is evident from Bible passages which tell us that humanity was created in the image of its creators. Not as an unseen spirit, but with
a full corporeal identity in a physical world that was intended to be perfect. Unfortunately this halcyon mood did not last long!
Through the combined insight of ancient writings from virtually every corner on Earth it is possible to
build an amazingly consistent picture of what later transpired.
Rebellion.
With surprising unanimity the ancient sources agree that humanity eventually rose up to challenge those who
created him. This resulted in a bitter confrontation followed by a parting of the ways. Heartily sickened by Mankind’s waywardness the “gods,” abandoned the Earth, taking with them the secret of eternal
life from which the human race was now severed. Progress would now be slow and laborious. Instead of halcyon perfection there was only a bitter struggle to eke out a daily existence.
Return of the gods.
Nevertheless the influence of the sky gods was not totally severed. Indeed it seems that in every epoch and
in every age there have always arisen gifted visionaries whose insight and direction have kept humanity focused on the significance of virtuous behaviour and the sky as the abode of the gods. Indeed it
is the consistent theme behind many religious beliefs that eventually - at a time of great need - the sky gods will again return to save the planet and restore the secret of eternal life that was
snatched away so very long ago!
Deeper reality.
Today all concept of such an astonishing struggle has long since passed from mind. Even worse is the
tendency to view such thinking in terms of baseless myth and legend. Yet we exist. No one really knows quite how or why, or even how long we have been here. All we really know is that by some weird quirk
we inhabit the third planet from the sun in a solar system that is an infinitesimal part of the Universe that surrounds us.
Great mystery.
However much we may choose to ignore it there is no avoiding the fact that we are part of a very great
Universe - a dimension of such great mystery that is awesome to contemplate. Peculiarly we often attempt to minimise that mystery by confining it with our Earth bound logic. However the truth can never
be kept silent and it is certain that before long the reality of who we are and where we came from will again be made evident in the most remarkable of ways.
Crucial time.
This is the age of that enlightenment and as humanity faces so many crucial problems it is easy to predict
the coming of a universal change of awareness - perhaps even the return of the sky gods themselves!
