An affair of the mind.
The desire to understand the UFO phenomenon has led some experts to believe the answers lie all in our mind. This is not the same as saying as attributing it to pure
imagination, rather a form of collective awareness that produces objects capable of being seen and heard! In other words UFO's are rather like ghosts! They seem not to belong to our own dimension yet
interact with us in a manner not fully understood!
According to this theory it is we ourselves who are creating these images! This may seem difficult to accept for those who have witnessed UFO's, but the evidence suggests at
least some sightings might be explained in this way!
Hidden Powers.
But how can a mere thought in ones head transform itself into an experience as real and exciting as a UFO? Here we are asked to consider the hidden powers of the mind - the
raw material for performing all kinds of extraordinary feats! According to the theorists it's rather like the crowd at a football game! When one person cheers, only those around him can hear; but when
twenty thousand people start cheering in unison, their voices can carry for miles!
If the same logic is applied to the mind, then thousands of people all thinking the same thing might be capable of externalising that thought into a tangible object! In
other words if thousands of people all think of a UFO, then the power of their thinking is capable of making one appear!
Tulpas.
In the remote regions of Tibet there is a belief in tulpas, described as beings of the mind. By magical methods these are then transferred into a tangible reality! Some
theorists believe that UFO's are actually tulpas created by ancient peoples thousands of years ago! Released from the minds of their creators, they are set free as independent agents, able to roam the
atmosphere completely under their own guidance!
Not just of the dead.
Also worthy of consideration is the fact that ghosts are not limited to apparitions of the dead but also of the living. For instance when Terry Waite was held hostage in
Beirut, he often liked to imagine places back home that he felt especially attached to. The astonishing thing is that on numerous occasions during his captivity at least two people recall seeing a ghost
like figure of Terry Waite walking in these same locations.
The Shadow.
An incredible example of substantiation of thought power into a visual entity is described by author John Keel in his book "Visitors from space"! In it he
tells of an old house in New York's Greenwich Village! This was said to have been haunted by a man in a black cape and dark broad brimmed 'slouch hat'! Apparently no one of that description had ever
lived in the house, but this had most definitely been the home of Walter Gibson, prolific author of fiction, one of whose evil characters was known as The Shadow! This frightening fictional invention,
dressed in long dark capes and slouch hats, should have possessed no independent existence outside the mind of his author, yet for years the house was definitely known to be haunted by the spectre of
this terrifying apparition!
It was Keel's belief that the collective minds of thousands of readers may have acted to materialise this being!
Toronto Research Group.
A further example of externalised thought comes to us from Canada. Here a Toronto Psychical Research group is said to have created the ghost of a person who never existed.
According to Colin Wilson, in his book "Mysteries", they gave this person, named Philip a life-story and detailed background identity, and then attempted to contact him through a seance!
For several months they failed miserably, but then when they varied the approach things at last began to happen. According to Wilson: "One evening there was a rap on the table. This was not quite
what they had expected; they had hoped to cause Philip to 'materialise'. However they questioned the 'spirit' in the usual way (one rap for yes, two for no), and soon verified this was 'Philip', who
repeated the story they had invented for him".
Magical Creation
In her book "Magic and Mystery in Tibet" writer Alexandra David-Neel describes how by the power of thought she successfully created a phantom monk, who
appeared so real he was actually mistaken for a lama. Subsequently however this mind creation appears to have become hostile and malevolent and completely escaped her control! In fact it was only after
six months of mind bending labour that Neel claims she was able to gain the upper hand and dematerialise him!
Another author Dion Fortune relates a similar story in her book "Psychic Self-Defence" in which she claims to have inadvertently created a fearsome wolf! Once again this appears to have been a rather maliciously inclined beast, and it was quite some time before this mind creation was brought under control, mastered, and then finally 're-absorbed'!
Materialised thought form.
If these individual cases of mind creation appear frightening enough then it becomes even more terrifying to wonder what thousands of minds conjoined in the same purpose
might produce! Scientist and Ufologist Thomas Bearden gives us the following insight: 'The personal subconscious can sometimes directly affect the material world; the poltergeist phenomenon and
psychokinesis are direct examples. The collective species subconscious is vastly more powerful than the personal unconscious, and under appropriate conditions, it can directly materialise a thought form
which might be of an object, or even of a living being!'
Unconscious Materialisation.
It is Bearden's belief that "UFO's, fairies, angels, sasquatches, Loch Ness monsters, etc, are thus tulpa materialisation's from the unconscious - i.e., they are
'dreams of the race'! These creations of the unconscious mind are often believed to account for inexplicable waves of UFO sightings. It is well known these move in cycles - some periods when very few
sightings are recorded, and others when literally thousands of people all over the world are claiming to have seen strange objects in the sky! Nor are these mass sightings just limited to UFO's. Between
the year 1700 and 1740, there were thousands of reports of vampires, a fact that prompted author Colin Wilson to observe: "Waves of strange phenomenon seem to occur when there is a widespread
expectation of them"!
Media Influence.
In modern times these waves can sometimes be directly attributable to popular movies or television serials! Here of course there are a number of interpretations! For
instance films on rape or child abuse have often led previously reluctant victims to talk of their ordeal.
Exactly the same sort of stimulus has undoubtedly given courage to many UFO witnesses, who feel the times are right to tell others of their experience! If however we accept
the tulpa explanation, then the growing focus of attention on UFO's is itself the perpetuating factor that causes this phenomenon to be observed on such a wide level!
Ancient Links.
This externalisation of thought forms also has a link to the ancient world. We mentioned earlier that UFO's might be connected to ancient thought creations that long ago
escaped the control of their masters! In addition there is also an association with ley-lines and the presumed influence of invisible energy fields associated with the Earth's magnetic field. The nodal
points of these intersecting energy lines have long been renowned for their strange phenomenon including ghosts and UFO's.
The name ley -line was chosen because it was discovered that villages, towns and cities whose names ended in 'ley,'le, or 'leigh, were often to be found along the same
straight line! Significantly several of Britain's most haunted sites have this ley name ending. Consider for instance Borley Rectory and Chingle Hall - the former most haunted house in England, and its
current equivalent!
The exact connection between ley-line energy and the UFO phenomenon continues to be hotly debated! Some feel it to be a natural power source UFO's rely on, and others
perceive it as an entirely different kind of energy, capable of transforming thought projection into a perceivable entity. In this way ancient man could have materialised flying disc objects - which had
immense symbolic importance - in a way that still makes them visible today!
Devilish Origin.
The explanation of UFO's as a malevolently fashioned illusion is sometimes put forward by members of various religions, who see the whole phenomenon as 'the works of the
devil'! They believe that the devil has personally influenced the appearance of these objects as part of an optical illusion, designed to focus our minds away from the power of God! In particular these
theorists speculate that the current wave of interest and sightings of UFO's has been deliberately engineered to pave the way for the coming of the AntiChrist.
The basis of these beliefs hinges on the fact that slowly, bit by bit, our perception of the paranormal is being raised so that when the AntiChrist appears - undoubtedly
seeming to be a person of great magnanimity - he will be feted as a New Age Messiah, the solver of all the worlds problems. By way of confirmation he will show (through acts of delusion) great signs and
wonders, apparently "calling down fire from the skies, and making stone statues speak"!
According to the Bible the Anti-Christ will make out that he himself is God. To the world at large he will seem like the perfect New Age ruler, and by the time his true
colours are manifest it will be far too late!
Control-system.
In this scenario UFO's are part of a "control-system" mechanism whereby our understanding of the paranormal is raised just so much to enable us to come to terms
with the momentous events shortly to befall this "troubled planet" of ours!
In their book "UFO's - what on Earth is happening?" authors John Weldon and Zola Levitt state: "UFO's are a manifestation of demon activity. They are
here to misguide the multitudes and they are going pretty well." Weldon and Levitt also speculate that whether we believe in UFO's as "solid objects or subtle delusions", is entirely
immaterial! According to them the whole manifestation is capable of being controlled at will. "If the demons wish them to be there, they are there, and if they wish people to imagine they're there,
then they are imagined to be there"! The authors go on to say: "With the powers we know demons to have, they could theoretically transform a huge chunk of rock into a UFO, assume human form
inside it, and land openly, thus 'proving' the existence of advanced intergalactic civilisations."
Conspiracy of evil forces.
Continuing on this theme we find that in an article entitled Heralds of the AntiChrist, published in the magazine "The Unexplained", writer Hilary Evans quotes author Dan Lloyd as saying: "It would truer to say that they (UFO's) are deliberately distorted etheric effects, and it should surprise no one to learn that such effects can influence physical matter and create in turn, physical effects." The article then goes on to quote two other authors Anthony Roberts, and Geoff Richardson, who "see UFO's as the latest manifestation of a centuries old conspiracy of evil forces - gods, demons, spirits, fairies - who seek to manipulate human credulity for their own ends."
Greek perception.
At this point it might be worth pointing out - to confuse the matter even further - that the word demon, which is of Greek origin, originally meant some incredibly gifted
god-like person, capable of astonishing feats of mental and physical dexterity! In ancient Greek times it was the highest compliment to refer to a person in this manner, quite unlike today's term of
opprobrium!
The Gateshead Incident.
The notion of UFO's as some form of deliberate delusion, or something not quite as physical as it seems, is for some the clue to their astonishing abilities. In 1979 a
peculiar episode in Gateshead, in north-east England, prompted Jenny Randles to believe that some elements of the UFO phenomenon might be explained as some form of projection akin to a hologram.
Apparently a mini-UFO had entered the room of a house, passing straight through closed windows! This apparent violation of physical laws led Randles to believe that some
form of psychical projection was involved. She concluded: "It may be that UFO's are images in our minds, not travellers in space. In some cases these images may become so powerful they are projected
by the mind and seen as semi-material entities!"
Conclusion.
In conclusion it is possible that a modicum of truth can be found in all of these theories. The UFO mystery is above all bewildering for its sheer diversity, and different
descriptions of things seen and experienced, are difficult to explain if we try to force it all into one all embracing category! The answer is clearly much greater than this, and I believe it would be a
mistake to search for just one explanation. In reality there may be hundreds, and I believe that linked to these answers is a strong body of evidence that suggests some UFO sightings might not be as
solid as they seem!
