Martian Mystery.
Why are space probes to Mars vanishing into thin air? Is there some mysterious secret about the Red Planet or is it just bad luck? Whatever the truth the plain facts of the
matter are that of every three probes sent to the planet, two are lost without trace.
Over the last ten or twelve years these statistics have deteriorated even further. Of the nine missions sent to Mars since 1988 only two have successfully touched down on the planet. It means that millions upon millions of dollars worth of equipment have been lost, and scientists are at a loss to explain the reason why.
Bermuda Triangle.
Not surprisingly Mars has become known as the Bermuda Triangle of space. Even hardened scientists are referring to it as a jinxed planet, and find the loss of so many probes
a bitter blow to future plans to colonise the planet.
The reasons for these losses are hard to quantify. Hardware failure, human error, and simple inexperience may certainly account for some of the failures, but do not answer
why a number of Martian probes just disappear, when all appears to be working normally.
Alien Influence.
In the wake of these strange events there have been no shortage of theorists who claim that Martian probes are being sabotaged by alien beings who have already staked a
claim to the planet. In recent years these views have fast gathered ground, and although such claims appear far fetched and ludicrous, it would only need the failure of a few more missions to thrust this
theory even further to the fore.
Rumours of a warning.
Similar theories were advanced for the rather surprising loss of interest in travelling to the moon. At one time there were plans to build moon bases with a view to
exploiting the moons undoubted mining potential. Then suddenly all this interest evaporated. Rumours spoke of aliens who claimed the moon to be their own, and warned they would tolerate no more “visits”
to their world.
For awhile interest in these rumours flourished quite dramatically culminating in the publication of numerous books purporting to prove the existence of an underground world
on the moon. A civilisation that according to the authors also had links to a similar one on Mars.
